Dr. Aamir Hussain successfully defended his PhD thesis titled "Isolation, Characterization and Animal Model Testing for Efficacy and Adverse Effects of Bacteriophages against Acinetobacter baumannii" on January 31, 2024, at the PhD Hall, Academic Block, Khyber Medical University, Peshawar. The defense was attended by various dignitaries including the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Zia Ul Haq, and other academicians, scholars, and researchers from different institutions across the country.
Dr. Aamir Hussain, an MBBS graduate from Army Medical College with FCPS in Microbiology from CPSP, serving as a Lieutenant Colonel and Pathologist at Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Hospital, Wah Cantt, attributed his success to his supervisor, Dr. Ihsan Ullah, Associate Professor at Khyber Medical University, for his invaluable support during the research.
Dr. Hussain's project addressed the pressing issue of antimicrobial resistance by investigating the potential of bacteriophages as alternatives to antibiotics. His research, conducted in collaboration with Bahaud Din Zikriya University, Multan, aimed to evaluate the efficacy and adverse effects of bacteriophages against Acinetobacter baumannii, a notorious multidrug-resistant pathogen.
Under the supervision of Dr. Ihsan Ullah and co-supervision of Dr. Muhammad Qamar Saeed, Associate Professor, the project was completed in a timely manner, resulting in the publication of three articles in high-quality national and international journals. This successful collaboration holds promise for further exploration of bacteriophage therapy as a viable solution to combat antimicrobial resistance and save lives.
