The Small Laboratory Animals Handling Workshop, jointly organized by the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences (IBMS) and the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (IPS) Khyber Medical University, was a resounding success. This event held on 12th September 2023 at Khyber Medical University. The workshop aimed to enhance participants' understanding of proper laboratory animal handling, ethical considerations in animal research, and the practical aspects of working with small animals.

The opening ceremony commenced with Dr. Zilli Huma (Associate Professor and Director Admissions and Academics KMU) as the esteemed Chief Guest. Muhammad Ali recited verses from the Holy Quran, setting a solemn tone for the event. Dr. Habiba Rashid (Assistant Professor IBMS), the resource person, delivered a warm welcome address, emphasizing the importance of humane animal research. The chief guest Dr. Zilli Huma provided valuable insights into the importance of responsible animal research.

The workshop featured a series of enlightening sessions and lectures. Dr. Najma Baseer (Associate Professor IBMS) addressed the audience on the ethical considerations surrounding animal research. She delivered an insightful talk on the ethical aspects of conducting research involving animals. Her presentation shed light on the responsibilities and ethical guidelines that researchers must adhere to.

Dr. Habiba Rashid conducted a comprehensive lecture on the proper handling and husbandry practices for laboratory animals. Participants gained valuable practical insights into the proper care and management of mice and rats.

Dr. Sami Siraj (Associate Professor and Director IPS) discussed the significance of using animal models in research, emphasizing their relevance in advancing scientific knowledge and medical discoveries.

Dr. Habiba Rashid, Dr. Muhammad Nabi (IPS-KMU) and Dr. Quratulain (Demonstrator KGMC) demonstrated practical techniques for handling and restraining mice and rats. Participants had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience under their expert guidance.

The closing ceremony featured the Vice-Chancellor of KMU Professor Dr. Zia ul Haq as the Chief Guest. The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the efforts of the organizing team and encouraged the continuation of such workshops on a regular basis. Certificates were distributed to both participants and organizers as a token of recognition and appreciation for their active participation and contributions.
